Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj was born on 26 July 1874 in the Ghatge family of Kagal (Nashik district). His original name was Yashwant. His father’s name was Jaisingrao alias Abasaheb and his mother’s name was Radhabai Ghadge. On March 17, 1884, Yashwantrawas was adopted by Anandibai. Since then he came to be known as Shahu Maharaj.
